Budge Budge The Legacy Of Komagata Maru

Budge Budge, the Legacy of Komagata Maru

A Historical Landmark

Komagata Maru Budge Budge is a railway station in West Bengal, India, that carries a significant historical legacy. Nearly a century ago, the station played a pivotal role in the aftermath of the Komagata Maru incident, a crucial episode in the struggle for Indian independence.

A Symbol of Resistance

In 1914, the Komagata Maru, a ship carrying 376 Indian passengers from Vancouver to India, was denied entry by Canadian authorities. Refused disembarkation, the passengers were forced to return to India, where they faced imprisonment and persecution. Upon their arrival at Calcutta (now Kolkata), the passengers refused to return to the Komagata Maru and instead squatted on the banks of the Budge Budge Canal, marking the station as a symbol of resistance.

Commemorating the Past

Today, Komagata Maru Budge Budge station serves as a reminder of this historic event. The station has been designated as a heritage site and is visited by people from all over the country to pay homage to the brave passengers who stood up for their rights. Its historical significance continues to inspire and motivate future generations.
