The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) provide real-time X-ray images of the sun, enabling scientists to monitor solar activity and predict potential solar flares. These plots are critical for tracking the intensity and duration of solar flares, providing valuable insights into space weather forecasting.

Recent Solar Flare Activity

On January 10th, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States Air Force (USAF) reported a major X398 solar flare originating from NOAA Active Region 3664. This flare is not only the largest produced by AR3664 to date, but also the fourth most powerful solar flare recorded this year.

The solar flare erupted at 11:08 AM CST and peaked at approximately X-class intensity. X-class flares are the most powerful type of solar flares and can have significant impacts on Earth's atmosphere and technology infrastructure.

Stunning Aurora Display

The X398 solar flare triggered a geomagnetic storm that resulted in a spectacular aurora display visible from high-latitude regions. The aurora, captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), painted the sky in vibrant shades of pink, purple, and green.
